A typical design using VSS to link the two Core 6500 switches is shown below. Notice that all links are forwarding (no STP loops), all Access switches see the Core are one switch, HSRP is not required and STP is turned on (Core is STP Root) but isn’t blocking any links.
A Direct Link is configured between the VSS pair for Dual Active Detection. This is the recommended topology for 6500 based solutions (with a suitable Supervisor which supports VSS such as the Supervisor Engine 720-10G (VS-S720-10G-3C/XL)).
